If you've looked at modern solar panels, you've probably noticed terms like 5BB, 10BB, and 16BB. But what do these numbers actually mean?
And does having more busbars always mean a better solar panel?
Let's take a closer look.
BB stands for Busbar. Busbars are the metal lines on a solar cell that collect and conduct the current generated by the cell.
In general, increasing the number of busbars can shorten the current collection path, helping reduce resistance and power loss.
This is the basic idea behind the development from 5BB to 10BB and 16BB.
5BB was widely used in earlier generations of solar modules, especially with 156mm cells.
Although it is no longer mainstream for new projects, 5BB remains important for older solar plants. When replacing a failed module, matching the original cell size, power, and electrical specifications can be more important than simply choosing the latest technology.
YS SOLAR has retained its 156mm / 5BB production capability.
In addition to commonly requested 275W polycrystalline modules, we can customize other legacy power ratings according to the original specifications of your solar plant.
10BB reduces internal resistance and improves current flow, offering a good balance between cost and efficiency. It is widely used in residential and carport projects where you want solid performance without the premium of cutting-edge cells.
16BB is an advanced multi-busbar design. It delivers higher efficiency, lower power loss, and better long-term performance — best suited to utility-scale power plants and advanced bifacial systems where every fraction of a percent matters.
5BB → Legacy solar plant maintenance & replacement
10BB → Residential, commercial & carport projects
16BB → Utility-scale & high-efficiency bifacial systems
The key to choosing the appropriate technology depends on your project and system requirements.
