“Lower wattage, but a higher price? Sounds strange, right?” This is a question we once received from a customer in Haiti.
But in the solar industry, panel pricing is not determined by wattage alone. Production capacity, demand, and supply availability also matter.
The Counterintuitive Truth: It's About Supply, Not Just Wattage
Today, most solar factories focus their production capacity on 500W, 600W, and even higher-power modules.
So what happens to 300W panels?
They have gradually become legacy products.
When a product is no longer mainstream, three things usually happen:
· Production volume drops as factories prioritize higher-demand modules.
· Fewer manufacturers produce it as older production lines are upgraded or retired.
· Supply becomes limited — and limited supply can mean higher prices.
Many early 300W modules also used 5BB solar cells. As the industry has moved toward 10BB, 16BB and other multi-busbar technologies, 5BB cell supply has become more limited.
YS SOLAR Still Keeps 5BB Production. For new solar projects, higher-power modules are now the mainstream choice.
But for older solar plants, the situation is different.
When an existing module fails, the customer may need a replacement panel that matches the original size, power rating, and electrical specifications — not simply the latest high-power module.
That's why YS SOLAR has retained its 156mm / 5BB production capability.
